چکیده

Abstract Due to its prominent role in online social networks, avatar creation has become an important research topic the field of computer-mediated communication. One main motive for creating avatars is representation one’s own identity. Previous indicates that depends on activity context which created. Though, studies comparing a wide variety contexts are still missing. The present study addresses this empirical gap by examining (1) self-representation physical, demographical, and personality characteristics through avatars, (2) differences between various contexts, (3) between-participant variance ascribed traits. Participants attributed their one six indicated same actual ideal selves. We analysed data 568 participants found high level congruence demographical/physical avatar, self, self. Furthermore, we idealised avatar’s traits, was affected specific context. Last, traits mainly larger than self but smaller indicating link norms. These results deliver new insights into strategies behind different build basis future practical implications developers designers virtual worlds.

Identity and Representation through Language in Ghana: The Postcolonial Self and the Other

Research related to colonialism and post colonialism shows how the identities of indigenous people were constructed and how these identities are reconstructed in our contemporary world. The thrust of this paper is that colonialism brought a shift in the linguistic structure of Ghana with the introduction of the use of English among Ghanaians. The coexistence of both Ghanaian languages and Engli...

Talk to the Virtual Hands: Self-Animated Avatars Improve Communication in Head-Mounted Display Virtual Environments

BACKGROUND When we talk to one another face-to-face, body gestures accompany our speech. Motion tracking technology enables us to include body gestures in avatar-mediated communication, by mapping one's movements onto one's own 3D avatar in real time, so the avatar is self-animated. We conducted two experiments to investigate (a) whether head-mounted display virtual reality is useful for resear...

Embodied Interaction in Immersive Virtual Environments with Real Time Self-animated Avatars

This paper outlines our recent research that is providing users with a 3D avatar representation, and in particular focuses on studies in which the avatar is self-animated in real time. We use full body motion tracking, so when participants move their hands and feet, these movements are mapped onto the avatar. In a recent study (Dodds et al., CASA 2010), we found that a selfanimated avatar aided...

The impact of self-avatars on trust and collaboration in shared virtual environments

A self-avatar is known to have a potentially significant impact on the user's experience of the immersive content but it can also affect how users interact with each other in a shared virtual environment (SVE). We implemented an SVE for a consumer virtual reality system where each user's body could be represented by a jointed self-avatar that was dynamically controlled by head and hand controll...

Visualizing ideal self vs. actual self through avatars: Impact on preventive health outcomes

The self-discrepancy between one’s actual self and one’s ideal self, which is associated with negative emotional states (e.g., depression) or unhealthy lifestyles (e.g., eating disorders), is mostly caused and intensified by exposure to unrealistic images of others (e.g., celebrities or magazine models). Drawing from regulatory focus theory, the current study examines whether creating self-rese...
